What is web design?
If you are new to the web world and have just entered the world of programming, you must have heard the term web design many times. And you must have asked the question of what web design is. Maybe you still haven’t been able to understand the difference between web design and web programming. In this article, we answer the question “what is web design” and explain some other concepts to some extent and introduce useful resources for learning them.
What is web design?
What is the web?
If we want to answer the question of what web design is, we must first know what the web is and what the web is called. Below is a very simple (and perhaps somewhat technically incorrect) definition of the web:
The web or the World Wide Web, abbreviated as www, is what we call the Internet today. Today, through a browser and by connecting to this global network, we can access all the information in it.
If you are looking for a very comprehensive and specialized definition, the Jahan Gostar webpage on Wikipedia can be useful for you. But this simple definition is enough for us to know that the Internet is a place of data that we can connect to.
What is a website?
After answering the question of what is the web, we get to the website. You must have heard the name of the website many times. I want to explain the concept of a website to you with an example.
Just as we rent a part of the land for living or business in the real world, we can do this in the internet world as well. This means that we can rent a part of the Internet and have that part for ourselves for a while. The part that we rent on the internet and that belongs to us for a while is called a website. In fact, websites are our lands on the Internet that we can use in various ways.
What is web design?
We also got acquainted with the concept of the website. Now we want to get to our main question: What is web design?
Just as in the real world we use plastering, paint, cabinets, household items, etc. to beautify the house, in the internet world we can use tools to beautify our website. In other words, in the online world, tools are provided to us, using which we can first build our site and then make it beautiful.
In the real world, first we rent or buy a land, then we build it using concrete, cement, rebar, brick, etc., and in the last stage, we make it beautiful with plastering, paint, ceramics, flooring, etc. It is exactly the same in the web world. First we build our site, and then we make it beautiful using tools.
So, in response to the question of what is web design, we can say very simply: Everything that helps our website to look better and more beautiful is called web design.
A web designer determines how the various elements of a website such as texts, photos, links, etc. should be displayed and where each part of the site, such as logo, articles, menu, etc. should be placed on the web page.
Do not confuse web design with web programming!
The mistake that beginners usually make is that they confuse web design with web programming. If these two concepts are completely different from each other, they should not be used interchangeably.
Web design is a set of works that creates the appearance of the site. In fact, everything that the user encounters and what you see on your monitor screen is the result of web design and the work of the web designer. In fact, the main job of a web designer is to design things that users directly interact with and see on their monitors.
But web programming is different. A web programmer writes web codes that the user cannot see, and those codes do not directly affect the appearance of the site and are executed behind the scenes, for example, they take articles from a database or a database behind the scenes and show them to the user.
What tools do we need for web design?
So far we have tried to answer the question of what is web design. Now we want to see what tools we need for web design.
There is no need to have complex facilities to design web pages. You can see the minimum we need below:
An environment where we can write our codes. This environment can be Windows Notepad or a more professional Text Editor or IDE (such as phpStorm).
An Internet browser (Browser) through which we can run our codes (such as Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.)
